Interview Tips

People often feel nervous when attending an interview which is why it is important to always ensure that you are fully prepared before attending any interview.

Below are some tips that will hopefully help you:

• Always research the company you are going to, look at their website, press releases, library, trade journals or even the company’s own literature (often good information can be found in Reception as you wait – but don’t leave it until then!)
• Decide on your interview clothing the night before, personal presentation is important, business dress is safest, and be conservative in your use of fragrance, cosmetics and jewellery.
• Ensure that all the necessary paper work is also ready, i.e. application forms, additional CV’s etc. Candidates are often asked to bring proof of eligibility to work in the UK to interview, if this is the case make sure you have that information with you
• Know exactly where you are going, (this may mean doing a dummy run the day before), and whom you should ask for when you arrive. It would also be useful to know their position within the company.
• Always arrive 5-10 minutes early as this will give you time to settle down before the interview begins. Don’t arrive late.
• Greet the interviewer by name.
• Base your questions on the research you have done and on relevant areas of the role i.e. targets, training and progression within the company.
• Avoid making negative remarks regarding previous employers.
• Do not pretend to know something you don’t. If you are not sure of the answer then say so.
• Ask the interviewer if they have any concerns regarding the information you have provided. This gives you a chance to re-address any objections before you leave.
• End the interview on a positive note, thank the interviewer for their time. If you are still really interested in the position then let the interviewer know.
